Living and growing in New York

April 2019 will mark two years since I moved to NYC, first to finish my sabbatical year, then to join Colangelo & Partners’ Influencer Relations team in November of 2017.

It’s true that New York traps you. Its rhythm is hectic. But I won’t complain: amidst the craziness of the city, I’ve found time and space to connect, with others and myself; to grow personally, and make things grow professionally.

The lists

I haven’t travelled as much as I wanted, I haven’t written a lot on here, I haven’t opened my marketing newsletters each day or visited industry publications every week, but this is what I’ve done:

  • Gotten inspired by the streets
    The style, the grace, the kindness and open-mindedness of New Yorkers is out of this planet. Only in New York, they say, and most of the times it’s true!
  • Spent uncountable hours on Instagram
    Over the years I’ve built a job out of my passion, and that’s priceless. Browsing Instagram for work has been a dream, and I’ve found endless insights and inspiration that have made me understand the world better.
  • Listened to positive postcasts
    From How I Built This to Hidden Brain, I’ve spent my commutes listening to the stories and experiences of passionate individuals who are changing the world for the better.
  • Written a lot about influencer strategy
    On new business proposals, on internal documents, on blogs and on interviews. And I’ve learned by sharing what I know and by listening to everybody’s questions and opinions. There are many things that need to change in this discipline, and I’m ready to help.
  • Attended inspiring talks
    Everybody asks where I find the talks I attend: Design Driven and Content Strategy at Huge are only two examples of fantastically curated events. Keeping your eyes and your mailbox open is key to finding the rest. And of course, making a priority to leave the office on time as much as possible also helps.
  • Shared my past digital marketing experience
    When I decided to join a PR agency, I didn’t really know how much my specific digital marketing background would be useful. But I’ve been able to help and guide and put my experience in practice in a completely new market, which has been both challenging and exciting.
  • Learnt a lot about wine, spirits and the hospitality industry
    I never paid to much attention to the wine, spirits and hospitality industry before, not sure if it was just because I saw it as a commodity or because I had not been exposed to it enough. Working with winemakers, mixologists and restaurant managers has felt like diving into the other side, and has made me appreciate it much more.
  • Climbed literal walls
    Brooklyn Boulders is a welcoming community and safe space to hide from the heat, the cold, judgment and prejudice. Bouldering there has been fun and challenging, providing a way to disconnect from work and connect with myself, and new and old friends.

As I plan the next phase, I’m making a list of all the things I want to do in New York before I leave the city, and I’m realizing I don’t have many pending items. Clearly, I’ve prioritized living and growing, and I think I’ve done a good job.
